The Full Monty

Yesterday I mentioned the Globe Theatre – that magical place where many of Shakespeare’s plays first played. Well, I have another Globe story that I thought you might enjoy.
Back in 1997, a reconstruction of the Globe was built near the site of the original. It was beautifully created using the same materials – the only exception being a sprinkler system installed in the thatched roof. This was probably a good idea considering that the original Globe went up in flames in 1613 when a cannon misfired during a performance of Henry the Eighth.
Anyway, the Globe restoration cost a pretty pence. So, one way they generated money was through the “sale” of pavers that were to be placed around the completed building. For a hefty sum, your name could be engraved within the paver for all the world to see, like, forever and ever until the end of time.
As you can tell by the photo above, one of the paver purchasers was John Cleese of Monty Python fame. For those of you younger than dirt, John also played the part of Nearly Headless Nick in the Harry Potter films.
However, John did not simply pay for his paver and move on. No, no, no. In fact, he told the Globe fund-raisers that he would NOT purchase a paver unless he could buy two – one for himself and one for his dear friend and Monty Python co-conspirator, Michael Palin.
But John had conditions
Yes, he would pay handsomely,
BUT
only if Michael Palin’s paver was right next to his.
AND
they misspelled Michael’s name.

Forever and ever,
until the end
of time.

I’m guessing that John is probably responsible for the splotchy bit in the corner of Mike’s stone, as well.

PROMPT: It’s all about the Pythons and their Flying Circus today. Push the boundaries of “acceptable” writing. Get a little crazy. Go a little wild. Create your own dead parrot sketch or sing of the Spam we knew before the Net.

England ROCKS!

WOW! What a holiday!
Obviously, one of my stops included the magnificent Stonehenge. If you want some proof that human folks have been creating stuff for a long, long time, I suggest that you take a trip and see it for yourself.
Talk about SERIOUS creative effort! The Henge we see today was completed about 3500 years ago – with the sarsen stones hauled in from 25 miles away and the bluestones from a whopping 240 miles away.
I can only imagine the moment that some bloke first conceived this creative concept…
“Whoa! I just had a vision, man. Like, a BIG calendar made of colossal stones. We should, like, build it.”
“Dude, are you out of your prehistoric mind??!! That would take, like, FOREVER – and we’re lucky to live 30 years!”
“Don’t be a buzz killer, man – it would be wicked awesome! Who’s with me?”
“I’m in.”
“Me, too.”
“Well, the Wii hasn’t been invented yet, so I’ve got nothing better to do.”
And it was, in fact, wicked awesome.
After a morning at Stonehenge, I spent the afternoon at the nearby Salisbury Cathedral. This church has the tallest spire in England and was completed in 1258 AD.
I can only imagine how that creative conversation went down…
“Whoa! I just had a vision, man. Like, the tallest church ever! So tall, man, that the steeple will poke God right in the eye! We should, like, build it.”
“Dude, are you out of your medieval mind??!! That would take, like, FOREVER – and most of us are lucky to live to 35!”
By the way, that cathedral is covered with life-sized stone statues such as this:

I’d say those stoner dudes on the Salisbury Plains made some pretty good use of 2700 years of carving practice.

PROMPT: Rock out! Those hard bits of earth have so much poetic potential –whether you’re writing about tombstones, gravelly voices, or rock and roll.  So gather no moss today and set a pebbly poem in stone.

What if you declared your independence…
from adulthood?
Come on, just for today.
Trust me, there is no better way to boost your creativity…
Just ask any kid about his or her missing homework, and you’ll be blown away by imagination and inventiveness!
So get out the hula hoops, beach balls, and super soakers –
It’s a great day to PLAY!

What if #8

What if the Beatles were right?
What if LOVE is really all you need?
Chances are, somebody you know needs love, too.
Get creative with the ones you care about. Send them something out of the blue –
A note
A picture
A pot-bellied pig.
Surprise them and I’m sure you’ll find that the old cliché is true –
What goes around does indeed come back around.

PROMPT: Okay, I’ll go first…
Thanks so much for taking the time out of your day to read this wacky little blog of mine. I think you’re the GREATEST! I wish you all the very best in making your creative dreams come true.
Much love,
Barb

What if #7

What if you spent this week capturing all the good stuff?

A lot of good stuff has been happening lately – a paint foal was born in a neighboring pasture, calves have shown up overnight – brand new and blinking in the fields, and flowers have budded and bloomed.
Life Sweet Life!
I’m sure there’s good stuff going on around you, too.
Notice it.
Drink it in.
Remember that all the “carp” reported in the news is only news because it’s actually rare.

PROMPT: It’s a great week to dust off the camera and snap up all the good stuff you can find. Trust me, there will be stories in those pictures. Just you wait and see.
